Depression Q & A

What is depression?

Major depressive disorder, or clinical depression, is a mood disorder that causes persistent feelings of discouragement, despondency and dejection. There are also other depressive mood disorders including:

  • Persistent depressive disorder: milder depression that lasts for a prolonged period
  • Bipolar depression: depressive episodes in bipolar I and II
  • Seasonal affective disorder: depressive symptoms during colder and darker months
  • Perinatal depression: depression during or after pregnancy
  • Premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD): severe symptoms before menstruation
  • Psychotic depression: depression with hallucinations or delusions

All forms of depression may negatively influence your feelings, thoughts, and actions, causing a worsening of your quality of life.

What are the symptoms of depression?

Depression causes symptoms such as:

  • Sadness or crying
  • Hopelessness
  • Helplessness
  • Worry about the future
  • Lack of interest in things you usually enjoy
  • Sleep pattern changes
  • Eating pattern changes
  • Speaking or moving slowly
  • Lack of motivation
  • Difficulty concentrating or making decisions
  • Lack of attention to personal hygiene
  • Fatigue
  • Physical symptoms
  • Thoughts of self-harm, death or suicide

It’s not unusual to have some of these issues when you’re faced with stressful and upsetting situations in life. But with clinical depression, your symptoms persist, lasting a minimum of two weeks. Other types of depressive disorders have their own guidelines, for example persistent depressive disorder is diagnosed after two years of ongoing symptoms.

When do I need help with depression?

The effects of depression can be subtle at first, so it may take some time to realize how it’s affecting you. As depression persists for longer periods or causes problems in your life, its effects may be more obvious. Linda may recommend medication if you are experiencing a decline in functioning or a significant reduction in your quality of life.
